Port Blair Renamed Sri Vijaya Puram

The Indian government, led by Union Minister Amit Shah, announced the renaming of Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram, reflecting Prime Minister Modi’s vision to remove colonial-era names and celebrate India’s heritage. This renaming honors the historical significance of the Chola dynasty’s influence in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Originally named after British surveyor Archibald Blair, Port Blair was part of colonial history. The islands, used as a naval base by the Chola Emperor Rajendra I, and the Cellular Jail, a symbol of India’s freedom struggle, add to the region’s rich legacy. This change aligns with India’s decolonization efforts.
