Punjab Arhtiyas Advocate for Agricultural Policy Reform

Punjab’s arhtiyas are advocating for the adoption of the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets Act, 1961, as a national model. This Act mandates farmers to sell their produce through regulated mandis, ensuring fair remuneration and income security. They oppose the National Policy Framework for Agricultural Marketing (NPFAM), which promotes deregulation and private investment, fearing it could undermine the mandi system and marginalize small farmers. Concerns also extend to private silo storage, which could lead to monopolistic practices and revenue loss for the state. The debate reflects the challenges of balancing traditional practices with modern market needs in agricultural policy.
