Renaming Gulf of Mexico

US President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” has sparked geopolitical discussions. The Gulf, named by Spanish explorers, holds historical and economic significance, accounting for a major share of US offshore oil and gas production. Renaming would require international consensus via the International Hydrographic Organization, as maritime names are globally governed. Trump’s proposal aligns with his broader criticisms of Mexico over trade and immigration, while Mexico’s President proposed renaming North America “Mexican America.” Such ideas, largely symbolic, face practical and diplomatic challenges, underscoring the complex interplay of history, geography, and international relations.
