Russia’s Floating Nuclear Power Plant Initiative

The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has approved exploratory drilling in the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, sparking debates on conservation versus energy needs. The site, critical for the endangered Hoolock gibbon, spans 4.5 hectares and lies 13 km from the sanctuary. A site inspection found limited immediate environmental impacts but emphasized opposition to commercial drilling. The NBWL imposed conditions, including real-time surveillance and pollution control. Conservationists express concern about habitat loss, as the sanctuary houses endangered species. Balancing energy development with biodiversity conservation remains a significant challenge.
