Rwanda Declares End to Marburg Virus Outbreak

\Rwanda officially declared the end of its first Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak on December 20, 2024, after 42 days of monitoring with no new cases. The outbreak, which began on September 27, 2024, caused 66 cases and 15 fatalities, mainly among healthcare workers. MVD, caused by the Marburg virus, is a highly fatal disease transmitted from fruit bats. Rwanda implemented effective case tracking, testing, and public education measures, supported by the WHO, which deployed its largest response team of 39 experts. No approved treatments exist yet, but promising vaccines are under development, such as one from the Sabin Vaccine Institute.
