Shantiniketan: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Shantiniketan, founded in 1901 by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in West Bengal, India, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Established as a residential school and center for art, Shantiniketan embodies Tagore’s vision of a harmonious blend of education, culture, and nature, transcending religious and cultural boundaries. In 1921, it evolved into Visva-Bharati University, emphasizing the unity of humanity. Distinct from prevailing British colonial architecture, Shantiniketan represents a pan-Asian modernity, drawing on ancient, medieval, and folk traditions. This recognition underscores its cultural and architectural significance, marking it as India’s 41st UNESCO World Heritage Site.
