Taiwan Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage
Taiwan has officially legalized same-sex marriage registration for cross-strait couples, allowing Taiwanese and Chinese partners to marry under the same process as heterosexual couples. This landmark decision builds on Taiwan’s 2019 legalization of same-sex marriage, making it the first Asian country to do so. The new policy requires couples to marry in one of the 35 countries recognizing same-sex marriage and undergo an interview process. Despite ongoing political tensions with China and citizenship challenges for Chinese spouses, Taiwan’s decision highlights its commitment to LGBTQ rights, setting a positive example for marriage equality in Asia.
