Trinidad and Tobago Declares State of Emergency

Trinidad and Tobago declared a state of emergency following a spike in violence, including gang-related shootings that raised the annual murder toll to 623, the highest since 2013. Emergency measures allow police expanded powers, such as searches without warrants and holding suspects for 48 hours, though no curfews are imposed to avoid disrupting public festivities like Carnival. Past emergencies in 2011, 2014, and 2021 addressed similar crises. The parliament will review the situation within 15 days to determine extensions, while public safety remains a priority.
