Two Rare Neuroptera Species Discovered in Kerala

Researchers at Christ College’s Shadpada Entomology Research Lab (SERL) in Kerala have rediscovered Glenochrysa zeylanica, a green lacewing species last seen 111 years ago and thought endemic to Sri Lanka, along with identifying Indophanes barbara, a non-pit-building antlion. These findings, supported by CSIR funding, highlight Kerala’s rich biodiversity and its shared ecological ties with Sri Lanka. The Neuroptera order includes 6,000 net-winged insect species globally. The study emphasizes the importance of entomological research in conservation, revealing potential for further species discoveries in the region. Both species were documented in leading journals, underscoring their ecological and scientific significance.
