UN Emergency Meeting on Venezuelan Claim to Essequibo Region
The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting following Guyana’s request over Venezuela’s recent referendum claiming sovereignty over the Essequibo region, a resource-rich territory comprising two-thirds of Guyana. The dispute, dating back to colonial agreements and the 1899 arbitration award, intensified in 2015 after significant oil discoveries. Despite a recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling ordering Venezuela to halt actions in the disputed area, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro pushed for exploration and exploitation in the region, escalating tensions. Guyana condemned Venezuela’s actions as violations of the U.N. Charter and ICJ orders, urging U.N. intervention to safeguard peace and regional stability.
