UNESCO Alert: Rising Ocean Temperatures
A UNESCO report warns of severe threats to marine life due to rising ocean temperatures, potentially increasing by 4.4°C by the century’s end under the SSP 8.5 emissions scenario. Tropical and subtropical regions, including the Tubbataha Reefs and Belize Barrier Reef, face extreme risks as up to 50% of fish species in these zones approach their thermal limits. Using eDNA technology, researchers monitored 21 marine World Heritage sites over three years, identifying 4,500 species. The findings highlight biodiversity and the risks of invasive species. Rising temperatures could lead to biodiversity loss, with species migrating to cooler waters.
