Urea Production Boom in India

India’s urea production rose significantly, reaching 31.4 million tonnes in 2023-24 from 22 million tonnes in 2011-12, with imports reducing to 7 million tonnes. Key drivers include six new energy-efficient plants in Eastern India, collectively producing 7.55 million tonnes. Another innovative coal-based plant in Talcher, Odisha, is under construction. While domestic production costs exceed imports, investments aim for long-term self-reliance (Atmanirbharta). Urea consumption increased to 35.8 million tonnes, stressing sustainable practices. The infrastructure, including LNG terminals, supports this growth, focusing on balancing regional production and imports for India’s agricultural sector.
