Uttarakhand’s Action Plan for Glacial Lakes

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) is developing a comprehensive plan to monitor and mitigate risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has identified 13 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, with five considered high-risk. Advanced technologies such as thermal imaging and water-level sensors are being deployed to enable real-time monitoring. The project is supported by a ₹30 crore allocation, emphasizing collaboration with institutions like the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing. Rising temperatures due to climate change exacerbate GLOF risks, highlighting the urgency of preparedness measures to safeguard vulnerable communities and ecosystems.
