Warming Waters Endanger Marine Species

UNESCO reports that nearly 20% of marine species in World Heritage sites face endangerment due to warming waters. Species such as the Caribbean reef shark and Atlantic bottlenose dolphin are at their heat tolerance limits. The Belize Barrier Reef is the most affected, with 53% of species impacted. Global sea temperatures have risen by 1°C since 1884 and may increase by 4.4°C by 2100, leading to ecosystem disruptions. Warming waters also alter oxygen and nutrient circulation, affecting water quality. Urgent greenhouse gas reductions and local conservation efforts are needed to protect marine biodiversity and ecosystems.
