WHO Boosts Pathogen Genomic Surveillance
The World Health Organization (WHO) launched ten projects under the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN) with $2 million in funding. These projects target pathogen genomic surveillance, improving global health responses, vaccine development, and treatment strategies. Key initiatives include antimicrobial resistance mapping by Ashoka University and avian flu monitoring by the Pasteur Institute of Laos. Funding from foundations like Gates and Rockefeller supports these efforts. The projects aim to empower low- and middle-income countries, emphasizing the role of genomic tools revealed during COVID-19, in combating future health crises.
